A commentary on New Icelandic grammar and developments in the language by William Henry Carpenter, an American philologist, and provost for Columbia University. Bound in half crushed morocco with cloth covered boards. Externally, worn with rubbing and light loss to the extremities. Light fading to the spine with the odd mark to the boards. Front hinge starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with light age toning to the extremities and the odd small spot or handling mark. Collectable; Good Noreen belonged to the school of Neogrammarians. Whilst in Leipzig, Noreen was taught Lithuanian by August Leskien, a pioneer of research into sound laws. Noreen's work, utilising the findings of the Neogrammarians, remained influential in the field well into the 20th century. His academic focus in the 1880s shifted to the field of historical linguistics, primarily centred on the Germanic languages. His grammars of Old West Norse and Old Swedish remain in use by scholars to the present day. Hardcover.
